Maintenance advice for solid wood products
Congratulations on your purchase from DroomHout, you now have a beautiful and honest natural product made of solid wood that looks great. Many people would like to know how they can keep solid wood furniture beautiful and that is what this article is about. In addition to all kinds of custom variations, there are roughly three main types of finishing of solid wood that you can distinguish: untreated, hard wax oil and lacquer. We discuss these different finishes of solid wood so that you can optimally enjoy your beautiful DreamWood furniture not only now but also for years to come.
Furniture finished with hard wax oil
If you chose to have your furniture treated with a hard wax oil in a natural or white wash shade when ordering, you have chosen a beautiful thick oil that protects the wood and ensures that the grain is even more beautiful. Hard wax oil is a thin layer of oil that gives your table or bathroom furniture a higher repellent effect against water and moisture. This layer of fat partly absorbs into the wood (the extent to which may differ per type of wood) and partly lies on top of it. The layer on top in particular needs to harden properly for optimal protection. Although a finish with hard wax oil feels dry immediately, it is therefore advisable that if you have just received your furniture from us , you are extra careful with water, heat and moisture on the furniture, especially during the first six weeks, as it takes some time before the underlying layer of oil has completely hardened. Do not use abrasives or furniture polishes when cleaning the furniture. You can simply wipe off excess water or moisture with a slightly damp cloth. It is important that no water or moisture remains on the furniture after use. For more extensive maintenance on your furniture, use special maintenance oil from Osmo, which is also available at DroomHout. If you use maintenance oil, make sure the table is completely clean and dry. Apply the maintenance oil thinly with a soft cloth and rub it with a dry cloth. This information is also on the label of the packaging, which is useful to consult before use. Always use coasters for hot pans, hot mugs and wet objects. This prevents stains and circles and your furniture stays nice and sleek. Specifically for bathroom furniture made of solid wood, it is important to wipe off excess water with a towel immediately after use. If water or wet objects (such as cups, toothbrushes, etc.) remain on the worktop, this can result in stains and rings. Most stains can simply be wiped away with a dash of hard wax oil or maintenance oil on a cloth, this is for the treatment of most stains. already enough. If signs of use become visible over time, lightly sanding the surface (preferably evenly rather than locally) before oiling can often provide the solution. If you re-treat large surfaces, it is advisable to also treat the underside of this surface to ensure an even effect of the wood. We are happy to advise you if you have any questions.
Furniture finished with lacquer
In addition to natural hard wax oil and white wash hard wax oil, Skylt lacquer is another very beautiful finish for solid wood that DroomHout offers as standard. This matte clear lacquer allows the wood to retain its original color and also provides a rock-hard protective two-component lacquer layer. In principle, Skylt lacquer protects against moisture for longer than hard wax oil from Osmo, but removing any stains is somewhat more labor intensive. To keep your wooden table or cupboard as beautiful as possible, DroomHout has a number of tips for you for maintaining your solid wooden furniture that has been finished with a lacquer. It may take one to two weeks for the table's lacquer to fully harden. Therefore, be extra careful during this first period. Avoid heavy loads, heat and excess moisture and wipe the furniture with a slightly damp cloth. Once the first two weeks have passed, in addition to the slightly damp cloth, you can also use agents that have a degreasing effect. for example dishwashing liquid. Abrasive cleaning agents and furniture polishes are not recommended. If you have spilled coffee, water or wine, for example, it is best to wipe it off immediately with dishwashing liquid and water. This will prevent stains on your beautiful wooden table. The paint is scratch-resistant but not scratch-resistant. Always use coasters with hot objects such as pans and hot mugs. This is also advisable for wet objects on, for example, bathroom furniture. What many people don't know is that you can also get circles in lacquered wood. This effect potentially occurs if condensation forms between the lacquer layer and the wood. This 'breakthrough' can also be prevented by using coasters and/or placing wet objects in another place that is not made of wood in combination with dry wiping after use in, for example, the bathroom.
Furniture made of untreated solid wood
The main reason for people to order DroomHout furniture untreated is because they want to do the finishing themselves. For example, to ensure that they match well with a floor or other piece of furniture in the same room. There are of course also pieces of furniture that simply do not need extra protection because they are not used intensively (such as a beautiful designer cupboard), although treatment with hard wax oil or lacquer can also be interesting because it can also reduce the UV effect of light on the wood. regulate in connection with discoloration. A final category of products that we usually supply untreated are the cutting boards from DroomHout. To prevent stains in this beautiful solid wood product, we have a number of tips for using, cleaning and maintaining the wooden cutting board. Before using the wooden cutting board for the first time, we recommend treating the wooden cutting board with grapeseed oil or other thin, tasteless and/or odorless oil. The use of olive oil is not recommended because there is a good chance that the wooden cutting board can become a bit sticky over time. It is best to apply the grapeseed oil by completely coating the wooden cutting board with the oil, for example with a brush. Then leave the oiled cutting board for a while until you see that all the oil has been absorbed. Once all the oil has been absorbed, you can grease the cutting board again. Repeat these steps approximately four times. Once the cutting board is well saturated with oil, you can start using the cutting board. The oil that has been deeply absorbed into the cutting board no longer allows moisture to pass through. If you want to clean the cutting board more thoroughly, that is also possible. With water and soap and then rinse thoroughly under running warm water. The most important thing is that when the plank has been cleaned with plenty of water, the plank is dried thoroughly in the first instance. Then place the cutting edge of the cutting board on a tea towel that has been sprinkled with salt and allow the board to dry.
